According to a 2014 study done by an online car insurance forum, the average American will spend somewhere in the neighborhood of $100,000 on car insurance. These are some simple tips to help you keep some of that money in your pocket.
1) Know What Each Line of Your Car Insurance Means.
One of the easiest and simplest ways to save money on car insurance is to understand exactly what you are paying for. So many consumers just buy the cheapest thing they find online or just keep the coverage they’ve since they bought the car. Just because you’ve had the same coverage for forever, doesn’t mean it's the right coverage. Car insurance can be complicated and difficult to understand. So use a guide like the one shown below, to at least know what each coverage means in your state. Once you know exactly what you are paying for, you are in a better position to get what you actually want.
2) Talk To or Meet With An Insurance Professional.
Now that you understand better what you are paying for, you need to figure out how to get the coverage you need. Because each state has different car insurance requirements, you are going to need to talk to or meet with someone who has expertise in your area. With so many companies and agents to choose from, ask your friends and family who they use. Check that person's website, look at their reviews on social media or google. If you like what you’ve read or heard, call their office. Sometimes you can get help on the phone, sometimes it's better to meet in person.
DO NOT - Call the 1-800 number for the company, the “advice” you will get is not going to be from someone who knows anything about your area. The 800 number reps are only trained to take payments and send ID Cards, they are not going to give good or helpful advice. Make sure you are calling a number that is in YOUR area.
3) Make Sure the Coverages You Have Are Right For You And Your Family.
So, you understand what coverages you have. You’ve met with or at least talked to an agent about coverage in your area. You are ready to make a purchase.
First thing, DO NOT BUY your coverage online from the cheapest company. While the online price may be $5 month cheaper, the problems you’ll have will cost you way more than that.
If you liked that agent you talked to, purchase it from them. If you did get online quotes, make sure you tell the agent, most likely he has a discount he can offer you, one you didn’t or couldn’t get online. In most cases, that agent will be able to provide you everything you need at the moment you get the coverage. If you do like to manage your stuff online, the agent should be able to set that up for you too.
