Happy holidays! As you are decorating your homes and hosting family and friends, keep in mind these safety tips to ensure a season of glad tidings, not unfortunate happenings.

Holiday Lighting

Don't overload electrical outlets. Overloaded outlets and faulty wires are a common cause of house fires.
Never connect more than three strands of incandescent lights. More than three can blow a fuse or cause a fire.
When considering holiday lighting, choose battery operated candles instead of flame-lit candles. Of course, the latter is more prone to accidents. In fact, they start more than half of home decoration fires.

Holiday Cooking

Baking for many more guests than usual can put a stress on you... and your kitchen appliances. Don't plug too many appliances in at the same time. No more than one high-wattage appliances should be plugged in to one outlet at a time.

Holiday Decorations

Keep the Christmas tree fresh! Make sure to sweep the floor for any pine thistles and water your natural tree routinely to keep from dying. Dry trees can become serious fire hazards.
Is your decor certified? Check the label for a testing laboratory (e.g. Underwriters Laboratories (UL)). Without this, the decoration has not been tested for safety. Turn off all decorations before heading to bed or out of the house.

Holiday Home & Travelling

Check the weather before heading out on your holiday vacation. Snowy or icy roads can lead to unsafe conditions. Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle in case you get stranded or an accident occurs.
Lock up the house tightly before you leave. Holidays are popular seasons for home break-ins (not just Santa Claus!). You can also ask your trust-worthy neighbors to keep an eye on your home while you are away.
