Flood

There are days in our lives where you can wonder why you do what you do. Then, there are days that smack you in the face and remind you why you keep coming back. For me, January 4th, 2018, was one of those days that showed me why I love what we do.

I received a notification in the afternoon that one of our long-time customers, Tony, had a significant water leak at his home due to a frozen pipe. To make matters more difficult he was out of the country for the holidays and the water had been running for as many as three days.

My first reaction was to begin the claims process. My second reaction was to rush over there to make sure things were getting taken care of.

Upon my arrival, I found the entire ground floor had standing water in it, the vents were gurgling, and the kitchen ceiling had fallen due to saturation. A plumber had already arrived and stopped the water and the remediation team was en-route. As the hours went by, I could see the water in the walls seeping upwards but also beginning to show through the ceiling in various rooms. With our customer being out of town, there was nobody left to handle things, so I stayed until about 2 a.m. while the remediation team dried everything they could, including removing nearly 1000 gallons of water just from the ventilation system.

The next morning, my daughter was giving me the 10th degree about where I was the night before, and I told her I was helping someone who couldn't be there to help themselves. In that moment, I reminded myself why I got into this business so many years ago: to help people. I have been at homes that burned down, blown away, and washed out, and seen the devastation on the face of my clients but also the hope that we provide for resolution.
